Japan’s Terra Motors sees sense in Lead Acid Batteries

Japan's Terra Motors launches new e-rickshaws

Terra Motors, a leading manufacturer of electric two and three wheelers in Japan, on Thursday launched Y4-Alfa e-rickshaw in India.

Y4-Alfa has been priced close to Rs 1.3 lakh and… is powered by Terra battery unit which gives a range of 100 km on full charge, said the company in a statement. The average weight of the e-rickshaw is 380kg and can accommodate five people, including the driver.

Terra Motors also launched its ‘Terra Battery for the Indian market, priced close to Rs 27,000 with one year warranty and is manufactured in Bangalore. “Terra Battery has a life span of at least eighteen months as compared to ordinary batteries, thus, reducing the operational cost of drivers significantly,” said the statement. The cost, range and life span of the battery point towards it being a Lead-Acid Battery.

Although Terra Motors, plan to sell 30,000 units of e-rickshaws and 20,000 sets of Terra Batteries by the end of the fiscal year we at PlugInCaroo feel that Terra Motors can sell more than 100,000 vehicles especially if they target the small car buyer. This is a vehicle that is cheaper than the Tata Nano yet can carry more passengers and luggage space.

The light weight e-rickshaw is also water-resistant and is suitable for sustainable urban transport as it has low fuel costs compared to even the low cost gas-powered vehicle. It also features rain covers that can be pulled down during rainy or sunny weather.
