Three Crore Chinese Electric Bus instead of a 20 Lakh Indian Bus? Why choose Chinese over Indian? Where is Made-in-India in all this?
Delhi is the new entrant of one of the seemingly unending “Pilot Projects” being conducted on Electric Bus Technology as if it is some kind of an alien technology. This has been going on since 2010. This is in spite of India being the Leader in electric Car technology till 10 yrs ago. Electric Vehicle as a concept and product had been proved beyond doubt by Chetan Maini with his Reva 20 yrs ago. This was at a time when Tesla as a company was not even founded and the best battery technology was Lead Acid battery.
But still through the years we have been conducting Pilot Projects with Electric Bus because for some it is unbelievable that a vehicle can run without putting in petrol/diesel. What we at PlugInCaroo CANNOT UNDERSTAND is WHAT IS TO BE ESTABLISHED by these pilot projects? The vehicle runs for free for 250 odd kms then recharge it with solar panels for free and then again run it for free? WHAT IS THERE TO ESTABLISH? If people are willing to give even Rupee 1 for their entire ride THAT WOULD BE A BONUS. So what is there to establish with Pilot Projects?
Mumbai has done it with BEST, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) has its own project, Bangalore has done it, Modi has flagged of one for Members of Parliament Nitin Gadkari has his project with ISRO. Mahindra has one running in the Agra-Taj Corridor.
Along with the electric bus one will also come across shocking price tags for such buses like the BYD electric buses of China which cost 3 Crore!!! The price of the bus is so high that the project is UNVIABLE and unsustainable.
Why are buses worth 3 Crore EVEN CONSIDERED when we in India have SPEEDWAYS Company Electric Bus costing just 20 lakhs??!!??
Then there is this CONVERSION-Technology that is being done especially the Nitin Gadkari version which plans on taking the old HEAVY and “khatara” diesel buses and converting them to Electric Buses… exactly like they did with CNG buses and trying to run it successfully. This too is UNVIABLE and unsustainable because of the inefficiency of the heavy body weight of the old diesel buses and its wheels.
Then we have Buses with Large windows which look beautiful and gives good view around. But these also bring in a lot of heat from outside. This extra heat will put extra unwanted burden on the electric Buses especially if it is air-conditioned.
Then there is this Air-conditioned bus model which are technically UNVIABLE and unsustainable because it uses almost same energy when stationary as it does when running. This is because the Air-conditioner is running continuously EVEN ON NORMAL COOL DAYS this happens because the WINDOWS ON THE BUS ARE FIXED and un-open-able even on a normal cool day. But these type of buses provide excellent comfort to the passengers although they will give reduced mileage… But because of the fact there is no cost for the fuel it doesnt matter if the mileage gets reduced from 300 kms to 250kms or even 200kms. Electric Buses are still a much better option than a Petrol or Diesel or EVEN CNG vehicle.
The advantage of Electric buses over CNG buses is that electric buses are more silent and have less vibration when running than a CNG-Buss.
So the above technology models for Electric buses MUST BE AVOIDED BY ALL COMPANIES PURSUING ELECTRIC BUS TECHNOLOGY. The optimum electric bus must have the following:
The Essentials of Electric bus:
- Aluminum Body
- Aluminum or similar light Wheels.
- 100% Solar Roof
- NON Air-conditioned (low fare Rs 1 per km ticket cost)
- Air-conditioned (Rs 5 per km ticket cost)
- Built-in GPS & camera
- No need for Navigation Device (external can be attached)
- Rain resistant.
- Waterproof battery & motor
- Stone safety-mesh on windows
- LED Screens on the upper part to show route and location based advertisement about the coming stop. Eg if the Bus is going to Dadar advertisement of some shops etc in Dadar can be played if not normal advertisement. This will be a mode of revenue.
- Safety Door.
Electric Mini buses and its bigger siblings will also make excellent tourist buses and can easily replace the multi-axle Volvo and Mercedes buses because even the Volvo & Mercedes buses with all their quality seating and shock absorbers shake like earthquake even while waiting for passengers or at Signals due to the fact that they are run on Diesel vehicle.
What is completely unacceptable that our manufacturers are making Electric Vehicles but they are not even being considered by Government Department. In 10 years there has not been a Single Tender to supply Electric Buses for Public OR Private Use…
