India’s top automakers are steering away from polluting diesel models, but the real push towards cleaner electric vehicles is coming from the country’s cab aggregators.
Market leader Maruti Suzuki announced late last month that it will not sell any diesel vehicles from April next year, when the Bharat Stage VI emission standards kick in. The norms will make diesel models substantially more expensive. Tata Motors, the country’s fourth largest carmaker, too, has indicated that it’s planning to stop selling small diesel cars after the new standards are enforced.
Japanese electronics giant Panasonic is lining up a electric vehicles charging grid across top 25 Indian cities looking to set up one lakh charging stations and telematic solutions by 2024 to power over a million vehicles. The company – one of the key partner battery cell supplier for American electric vehicles maker Tesla plans to set up mini charging facilities at parking stations, malls, petrol pumps, and specially developed zones across cities such as Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Amravati, Hyderabad, , Gurgaon, Noida, and Ghaziabad.
The power ministry would soon bring an electric vehicle(EV) charging infrastructure policy, which will also allow individuals to set up charging station for commercial use to boost e-mobility, said Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R K Singh Sunday.
“We have circulated the EV Charging Policy for comments (among other department/ministries). The second line of the policy says that everybody is free to set up EV charging station,” Singh told reporters at International Symposium to Promote Innovation & Research in Energy Efficiency (Inspire).
When asked whether individuals would be able to use the facility on commercial basis, he replied, “Absolutely. You dont need a licence”.
